Greater Accra Region

The Greater Accra Region has the smallest area of Ghana’s 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 3,245 square kilometres. This is 1.4 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. It is the second most populated region, after the Ashanti Region, with a population of 4,010,054 in 2010, accounting for 16.3 per cent of Ghana’s total population.

The Greater Accra region is the most urbanized region in the country with 87.4% of its total population living in urban centres. The capital city of Greater Accra Region is Accra which is at the same time the capital city of Ghana.

Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Region is located in south Ghana and is third largest of 16 administrative regions (formerly 10), occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) or 10.2 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. In terms of population, however, it is the most populated region with a population of 4,780,380 according to the 2011 census, accounting for 19.4% of Ghana’s total population. The Ashanti Region is known for its major gold bar and cocoa production. The largest city and regional capital is Kumasi.

The Northern Region is divided into 14 districts. The region’s capital is Tamale.
