How to screenshot on a Mac is a common question among new Apple users, especially those who are switching from Windows and are accustomed to using the Prt Scrn (Print Screen) button.

Even though taking a screenshot on a Mac merely requires hitting a few keys, it is nevertheless true that the process hasn’t always felt very natural.

How To Screenshot On Mac

Every Mac computer has the ability to take  screenshots that you can later edit or share. The entire screen, a window, or only a portion of it can be captured. Every Mac screenshotting method makes use of the Shift, Command, and number keys.

How to capture a portion of the screen

  • Shift, Command, and 4 are the three keys to press and hold together.
  • To choose the portion of the screen to capture, drag the crosshair. Press and hold the Space bar while dragging to move the selection. Pressing the Esc (Escape) key will stop the screenshot from being taken.
  • Discharge the mouse or trackpad button to take a screenshot.
  • Click the thumbnail to alter the screenshot if it appears in the corner of your screen. Alternately, wait until the screenshot is saved to your desktop.

How to capture a window or menu

The window or menu you want to capture should be opened.

Shift, Command, 4, and Space bar should all be pressed and held at the same time.

The pointer now resembles a camera. Pressing the Esc (Escape) key will stop the screenshot from being taken.

To capture it, click the window or menu. If you click while holding down the Option key, the window’s shadow will not be captured in the screenshot.

Click the thumbnail to alter the screenshot if it appears in the corner of your screen. Alternately, wait until the screenshot is saved to your desktop.

Obtaining screenshots

Screenshot [date] at [time].png is the default name for the file that screenshots save to your desktop as.

You may alter the default location of saved screenshots in macOS Mojave or later from the Options menu in the Screenshot app. You can also drag the thumbnail to a folder or document.

To copy a screenshot to the Clipboard, press and hold the Control key while you take the screenshot. You can then paste the screenshot somewhere else.
