About UDS

In an effort to hasten the development of Ghana’s then-three Northern Regions, the government of Ghana founded the University for Development Studies, Tamale, in 1992.

Its founding was greatly aided by the late President Jerry John Rawlings, who donated $50,000 of his prize money from winning the World Food Prize. The university was designed as a multi-campus system. It is Ghana’s fifth public university to have been founded.

This departs from the custom of having campuses and administrations centralized at universities. It was developed with consideration for the three northern areas of North Ghana.

These three regions are the Northern, Upper East, and Upper West. There are four campuses, eight faculties, a business school, a medical school, a graduate school, an institute, and three centers among its total number of institutions.
