StarTimes is a Chinese media and electronics conglomerate with a significant presence in Sub-Saharan Africa.

StarTimes offers digital terrestrial television and satellite television services to consumers, as well as technologies to help countries and broadcasters transition from analog to digital television. By July 2020, StarTimes will be present in 30 countries, with 13 million DVB subscribers and 20 million OTT users.

StarTimes Group was founded in 1988 by Pang Xinxing, a Chinese engineer who is also the company’s current chairman. In 2002, StarTimes began expanding its operations into Africa.

It became Rwanda’s first digital television operator in 2007. StarTimes has also established its translation and dubbing center in 2011, with a 10,000-hour output capacity and dubs in eight languages: Chinese, English, French, Portuguese, Swahili, Hausa, Yoruba, and Luganda.

In the year 2016, StarTimes held a Swahili dubbing competition in Tanzania and the proud winners were given jobs at StarTimes’ Beijing dubbing studio.

Later, competitions in Mozambique (Portuguese), South Africa (Zulu), Nigeria (Hausa), and Côte d’Ivoire were held (French).
