About Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB)
GCB Bank Limited, formerly known as Ghana Commercial Bank, is Ghana’s largest bank in terms of total operating assets and industry deposits, accounting for 14.2% of total industry deposits.
The Bank of Ghana, the country’s central bank, announced in August 2017 that it had approved a Purchase and Assumption transaction with GCB Bank Limited for the transfer of all UT Bank and Capital Bank (Ghana) deposits and selected assets to GCB Bank Ltd.
The Bank of the Gold Coast was established in 1953 with 27 employees as the Bank of the Gold Coast. It began by focusing on Ghanaian traders, farmers, and business owners who were unable to obtain financing from expatriate banks.
When Ghana gained independence in 1957, the bank rebranded as Ghana Commercial Bank to focus on commercial banking, as the Bank of Ghana was established to serve as the central bank and banking regulator.
Initially, the bank was wholly owned by the Ghanaian government. However, the bank’s stock was listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange in 1996, when the government held 51.17% of the company.
The bank renamed itself GCB Bank Ltd in 2013, with a new brand identity launched at the end of 2014.
