About TATU
In northern Ghana, Tamale Technical University is the top university for technical and vocational education in all of Africa. The history of the university may be traced back to a technical institute in 1963 and a trades school in 1951. Following its transformation from a Polytechnic under the Technical Universities Act, 2016 it was classified as a Technical University in 2018. (Act 922).
The University is free to operate as a publicly funded higher institution in Ghana. The National Accreditation Board has granted accreditation to all of the University’s programs (NAB). The National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations oversees the Higher National Diploma Programs (NABPTEX).
There are roughly 7000 students at the university, who represent different countries. The number of students and their backgrounds both indicates the strong support for cultural diversity. Presently enrolled are students from Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Burkina Faso. Academic excellence is a reflection of the diversity of the student body, the unwavering importance placed on practical training, and of the institution’s close ties to industry.
The Commonwealth Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa includes Tamale Technical University as a member. Additionally, it is a member of the Ghana Conference of Rectors of Polytechnics and Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities as well as the Association of Principals of Technical Institutes in Ghana.
