Recently, Google has been showing the “Google Meet app” inside our Gmail account, when logged-in into your Gmail dashboard. This alone prompt me to brief readers of ICT Catalogue on how the Google Meet app works and how you can make use of it for video calls amidst this pandemic coronavirus.

What Is Google Meet App?

Google Meet is a video-conference-calling platform that is designed primarily for professional use, which links remote colleagues together for real-time interaction.

Start or join a video call from Gmail

You can start or join face-to-face video calls while in Gmail.

How to Download Google Meet App — for Video Call

  • Go to the Play Store or App Store
  • Download and install the Google Meet app Meet app.
  • On your device, tap the Google Meet app Meet app to open it.

Start a meeting in the Meet app

  1. Open the Meet app Meet app.
  2. Tap Add New meeting to start a meeting, or tap Keyboard Meeting code, and enter a meeting code. G Suite users can type the nickname as well.
  3. Tap Join meeting.

Calls are synchronized across all devices so you can start a video call on one device and continue on another.

Before you begin –to start your first video call

  • For G Suite users: Sign into a G Suite account.
  • For non-G Suite users (using Google Meet with a personal account): make sure you have a Google Account.
  • Review the requirements for Google Meet.
  • When asked to use your computer’s camera and microphone, click Allow.
    • In “Settings,” you might need to turn on permissions for your camera and microphone.

Tip for G Suite administrators: To use Meet in Gmail, the video calling service must be on in the Admin console. Learn how to turn video calling on.

Platforms You Can Start A New Video Meeting

Start a video call

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Click “Start a meeting” Video call. Your meetings open in a new window.
  3. Before you join the meeting:
    • At the bottom, you can turn on or off your camera and microphone.
    • On the right, you can find the meeting code and meeting details.
  4. To enter the call, click Join now.
  5. A window will appear with your meeting details. Choose an option to add other people:

To share the meeting code:

  • Click Copy joining info.
  • Then, share the meeting code and link with someone.

To invite people by email:

  • Click Add people.
  • Next, enter names or email addresses.
  • Then, click Send Invite.

To invite people by phone:

  • Click Add people.
  • Next, click Call.
  • Then, enter a phone number.
  • When you’re done, click End call Call end icon.

Join a video call

  • Open Gmail.
  • Click Join a meeting Input.
  • Enter the 10-letter meeting code from the meeting organizer.
  • Click Join.
    • Before you join the meeting, you can turn on or off your camera and microphone.
  • To enter the call, click Join now.
  • When you’re done, click End call Call end icon.
