MTN Ghana is set to construct an ultra modern blood bank for the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital as part of its annual blood donation exercise in support of the blood bank at the Regional hospital in Cape Coast.

To the leading Mobile Telecommunication Network, MTN Ghana, MTN Ghana Foudation has set aside the February 14 every year to save blood during the blood donation exercise in all the 16 regions of Ghana.

The February 14 marks the Valentine’s Day as a day for showing your love and the only to show this love is to donate blood to support the blood bank and Regional hospitals in Ghana.

According to Mr. Samuel Koranteng, speaking at the annual blood donation exercise at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, he said it clearly that, his outfit vow to raise over five thousand (5,000) unites of blood from all the regions across Ghana to eliminate maternal deaths. To fulfill this mission, MTN Ghana therefore needs voluntary blood donors to stock up blood banks to support women during their child birth process and accident victims who need blood to live rather than relying on their family for blood replacement process that can be late.

Mr. Samuel Koranteng stated this, “We need frequent and regular blood donation because blood cannot be preserved like other commodities: the shelf life of blood I understand is only 35 days”.

Mr. Samuel Koranteng made it clearly on the statistics from the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital that this reveals that maternal mortality ration for the year 2018 was 860/10,000 live births, citing that the first half of 2019, out of the 15 maternal deaths that were recorded were blood related.

To Mr. Samuel Koranteng, it’s critical to have enough blood supplies and equip health centers with the facilities to store the blood collected.

MTN company used blood donation exercise to cut sod for the construction of a blood bank project at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital costing GH¢ 300,000.

The project which were compelling by the MTN Ghana Foundation board approved the construction of a blood bank for the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital is expected to complete in four months.

The project comprise, Reception area, office, Donor Lounge/Corridor, Bleeding Room, Laboratory, fridge Room, Store Room and Washroom.

 

Mr. Samuel Koranteng cited that the availability of a blood bank for the department will help provide enough blood for the emergency cases and also to help reduce the maternal mortality due to Obstetric Hemorrhage.

In conslusion to this, Mr. Samuel Koranteng stated that the provision of this facility is going to help in reduction of the department’s dependence on the main Teaching Hospitals Blood Bank which is overburdened already.
