Government Of Ghana To Launch Free Wi-Fi For SHS In October

In today’s ICT News in Ghana, it has been confirmed that the government of Ghana will be launching free Wi-Fi connections for Senior High Schools in October.

As revealed by the Minister of Communication, Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, there will be free Wi-Fi for Senior High Schools (SHS) from the month of October — as part of the government’s initiative to close the gap between digital skills and Information Communication Technology sector.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we can see how important technology played major roles and how Ghana’s lack of available skills in the ICT sector affected productions.

The Minister for Communication has started a call for action processes to ensure that the skills gap in the sector is closed.

Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful in speaking at the 2020 Annual Girls in ICT day climax from the Oti Region, the Minister for Communication also stated that government will be dispatching rural telephony to all rural areas that have no access to the internet.

“As the pandemic broke out, we have seen that the most important aspect of our lives is in ICT. The challenge, however, is the existence of some huge skills gap which we have to check and work on as soon as possible. The government will be launching the free Wi-Fi for Senior High Schools from October though the schools are on break,” she said.

The National Girls in ICT day is an initiative of the International Telecommunications Union for all member states.

The year 2020’s event from Oti Region is the 10th Edition and Ghana has been celebrating the event since 2012 with improved programmes.
