Ghana To Start National Roaming Service – Ursula Owusu Ekuful

Communication Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful has said Ghana will soon start a national roaming service where one will not need to own several SIM cards from different network providers to access good networks.

In a post on her Facebook page on Friday, April 30, 2021, she stated, “Ghana to start a national roaming service and interoperability wherein areas your network provider have no coverage, your SIM is automatically ported unto the available network for the period of time you are within the no coverage area.”

“This means one does not need to own several SIM cards from different network providers.”

This move means that, in areas where one’s network is non-existent or very poor, a subscriber’s SIM will automatically connect to another telecom network which has good connectivity.

The exact commencement date was however not stated by the Minister.

This decision if implemented will boost voice communication in the country by making connectivity accessible to all.

Roaming coverage extends the coverage of the network operator’s retail voice and SMS services, allowing the mobile user to continue using their phone number and data services within another jurisdiction.

Despite the boost in network architecture in Ghana, many areas continue to experience poor voice and data services.
